How a Personal Trainer created a Brand

As a teenager, Kieran Owens was a passionate footballer with his sights set on a career in the professional game. After not securing a senior contract at then League One side Tranmere Rovers F.C he moved to Spain to develop his game, not realising this would be the start of an exciting journey in a very different direction.

Alongside playing football and juggling a part-time job, Kieran became increasingly interested in health and fitness. With the help of his mum – a yoga teacher and his girlfriend, Rebecca, he started KO8 Escapes, which offered people the chance to holiday in Spain whilst accessing daily activities including yoga, hiking and of course, fitness classes on the beach.

It was here that a surprise encounter with one of his clients would literally change the course of his career. He was told “you will never become wealthy by simply hiring out your time, you need to build a brand….” He was given 2 books to read which were ‘The 4-hour work week by Tim Ferriss” and ‘Unfair Advantage: The Power of Financial Education by Robert Kiyosaki’

Some of Kieran’s most used equipment on the beach included dumbbells, resistance bands and suspension trainers, which he would attach to anything he could find. He soon started to search for an all-in-one solution, but it didn’t seem to exist.

The KO8 Functional Training System

‘No gym. No problem’.

This is the strapline featured on @K08_fitness Instagram page which at the time of writing has 33.7k Followers, including former Liverpool FC legend, Steven Gerrard who has used the equipment in the UK and when in Dubai, during warm weather training with Rangers FC.

The KO8 brand continued to grow when Kieran teamed up with school friend Sean Clancy and the company started delivering accredited Level 2 and 3 certification courses have been delivered world-wide, from Hong-Kong to Texas. Understandably, LLS students who listened to Kieran’s Q&A were inspired by his journey, but he emphasised that this is only the beginning.

Tips to Grow

The next stage in the development of the K08 brand is a state-of-the-art gym which recently opened in Dubai Marina, and despite the Covid-19 restrictions, Kieran remains upbeat and shared some useful tips to the listening students.

  1. Travel – ‘’Step out of your comfort zone, meet new people and grow as a person’’.

  1. Increase your knowledge – ‘’Do your research. Read, listen to podcasts and invest in yourself’’.

  1. Take on board advice – ‘’…but be unshakable in working towards your goals’’.
